Curriculum Intent

Our History Curriculum Aim

Our History provision is carefully curated to ensure that children gain a rich understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world. We encourage pupils to develop a curiosity and questioning mindset towards the events, people and concepts of History.

Through a range of activities and varied experiences, we equip children with the necessary skills and knowledge to develop as historians. As part of their learning, children will be able to ask insightful questions, evaluate and analyse evidence and contribute to discussion and debate.

History at FCVS aims to encourage children to appreciate a broad range of people's lives and perspectives that differ from their own; understand the causes of conflict and change; the diversity of societies and the relationships between different groups. This ultimately leads to a better understanding of their own identity and local history with a view to taking on the challenges and opportunities of our time.

How  we teach History

We aim to provide first hand experiences with role play, class assemblies, historical visits, workshops and visiting experts playing an important part in all our topics. Whether they are planning and enjoying a party or watching as a recreation of the Great Fire of London (EYFS/KS1) burns in our woodland area, children learn through seeing History come alive in front of them. Connections are made with the local community including observing archaeological digs in Burnham Beeches, visiting Roman Veralamium, forming up in a Viking shield wall or inviting local residents to join in a WWII tea dance. Other visits and activities include (subject to change depending on topics and availability):

  • a visit to St. Paul's Cathedral to learn about the effects of the Great Fire of London
  • practical workshops delivered by trusted experts covering aspects of Ancient Egyptian, Roman and Viking history
  • 'Goodnight Mister Tom' themed day at the Chiltern Open Air Museum

At the end of a unit, our children enjoy expressing what they have learnt in a variety of interesting and creative ways including; writing, art, drama and ICT. Some examples of these outcomes are shown below and are shared with parents, governors and the wider community when possible.
