  1. Junior Challenge Coach from each school to meet and discuss the year. Remotely or in person. FCVS Lead to organise. Focus: setting up programme. 

  1. Children’s Year 4 Assembly to introduce programme. 

  1. Letter 1 sent home – in pack. 

  1. Parent Meeting – presentation in pack. 

  1. Letter 2 sent home – in pack. 

  1. Collect responses. 

  1. Group meeting with Coach and children to discuss programme and Voluntary Section planning. Children to be given Log Books and a folder. 

  1. Group to meet bi-weekly to discuss progress and share experiences.  

  1. End of term Certificates (to come) awarded to children in school celebration assembly who complete section and tick off on Record. 

Spring 

  1. Junior Challenge Coach Meeting. Focus: review and improve.  

  1. Group meeting with Coach and children to discuss programme and Skills Section planning. 

  1. Group to meet bi-weekly to discuss progress and share experiences.  

  1. End of term Certificates awarded to children in school celebration assembly who complete section and tick off on Record. 

Summer 

  1. Junior Challenge Coach Meeting. Focus: expedition and ceremony planning.  

  1. Group meeting with Coach and children to discuss programme and Physical Section planning. 

  1. Group to meet bi-weekly to discuss progress and share experiences.  

  1. End of term Certificates awarded to children in school celebration assembly who complete section and tick off on Record. 

  1. Short expedition planned and experienced – up to 1 day bike, walk, canoe etc. This could be done jointly with other schools.  

  1. End of term Certificates awarded to children in school celebration assembly who complete section and tick off on Record. 

  1. End of Year Award Ceremony – to give bronze badges to children who have achieved all certificates. Parents invited. Experiences and achievements shared. This could be done jointly with other schools.  

 

Dear Year 4 Parents, 

 

Next term we will be starting a brand new programme, which to begin with will be exclusive to Year 4 children. To give you some background, I have always been impressed with ‘The Duke of Edinburgh Award’, as it really challenges people and shows that through commitment you can reach your goals. I think this is really important in developing our young people into rounded individuals. Unfortunately, this scheme is only open to people aged 14 and above, so we decided to try to replicate, tweak and simplify it to suit our children. We will call this ‘The Junior Challenge’ and our moto is ‘wellbeing through challenge, commitment and reaching goals!’. 

The premise is that it will run in a similar way to the DofE, but we will offer the Bronze Award to Year 4, the Silver Award to Year 5 and the Gold Award to Year 6. Children, with the help from home and school will be able to design their own bespoke programme for the following sections:
